Richard F. D’Amato, Ph.D.
Consulting Scientist, Infectious Disease

Dr. D’Amato received a Ph.D. in Microbiology from St. John’s University, Jamaica, NY and completed a Postdoctoral Fellowship in Public Health and Medical Microbiology at the Center for Disease Control in Atlanta, GA. His academic appointments include serving as Associate Professor for Clinical Pathology and Clinical Microbiology at Cornell University and Clinical Associate Professor of Medical Laboratory Technology, Department of Biological Sciences at New York City Community College of the City University of New York. He has held adjunct professor appointments at Long Island University, Brookville, NY and at the Touro College Center for Biomedical Education, Huntington, NY. In addition to his teaching experience, Dr. D’Amato has served as Vice President of Laboratories for API Diagnostic and Research Laboratories in Plainview, NY and Director of Clinical Microbiology at Catholic Medical Center in Jamaica, NY. He has served on the Editorial Boards of the Journal of Clinical Microbiology, the Annals of Clinical and Laboratory Medicine, Diagnostic Microbiology and Infectious Diseases and the Manual of Clinical Microbiology (5th ed.) He has over 100 professional publications to his credit. He has been active in numerous professional organizations including the American Board of Medical Microbiology and the American Society for Microbiology. Dr. D’Amato holds Laboratory Director certifications from the New York State and City of New York Departments of Health.

Peter Colaninno, MS, MT (ASCP) SM, CLS(NCA)
Vice President, Global Laboratory Services

Mr. Colaninno received his MS in Medical Technology from St. John’s University, Jamaica NY where he also completed his BS degree. He has been on staff at ICON Laboratories since 1997 where he has also served as Associate Director of the Infectious Disease Laboratory. Prior to joining ICON Laboratories, Mr. Colaninno served as Assistant Supervisor of the Bacteriology Laboratory at Mary Immaculate Hospital and Assistant Divisional Supervisor for the Mary Immaculate Hospital Division of Catholic Medical Center of Brooklyn and Queens. His academic appointments include Adjunct Professorships in the Physician’s Assistant Program at Hofstra University, the Department of Biology at SUNY, Farmingdale, NY, and the College of Allied Health Professions at St. John’s University, where he was recipient of the 1998 Alumni Mentor Recognition Award. He has authored or co-authored 20 professional abstracts and publications and been a presenter at numerous professional conferences and continuing education seminars. Mr. Colaninno holds a New York City Supervisors Certificate of Qualification and a New York City Technologist Certificate of Qualification. In addition, he is board certified as a Medical Technologist and a Specialist in Microbiology by the American Society of Clinical Pathologists and is also certified by the National Certification Agency for Medical Laboratory Personnel.

Trevor Dunning, MSc, MA
Laboratory Manager, ICON Laboratories

Mr. Dunning received his MSc from Brunel University and an MA in Management from the University of Hertfordshire. He holds a FIBMS from Paddington College and a CBiol and MIBiol from Manchester Polytechnic in Manchester, England. Mr. Dunning joined ICON Laboratories in 2004, after serving as Head BMS for Clinical Pathology, Hinchingbrooke and Papworth Hospitals and Chief BMS at Chase Farm Hospital.

Ronald L. Gambardella, Ph.D., DABCC
Consulting Scientist, Chemistry and Hematology

Dr. Gambardella holds a Ph.D. in Clinical Pathology from Ohio State University, where he also served as Chemistry Supervisor at the Ohio State University Medical Center. Dr. Gambardella has extensive, senior-level experience in laboratory management, having served as Laboratory Director for Bio-Science Laboratories, Founder and Director of Clinical Laboratory Testing for Clin Path/Tox in New York, Co-founder and Director of the Clinical Trial Division of NDA Laboratories, Director and Senior Vice President of Scientific Affairs for UCT International and Director and Vice President for ICON Laboratories Inc. He now serves as a consultant in Clinical Chemistry to ICON Laboratories. Dr. Gambardella is board certified by the American Board of Clinical Chemistry and holds Clinical Laboratory Director licenses in New York State, Connecticut and from the College of American Pathologists.

Marc G. Golightly, Ph.D., SI (ASCP)
Consulting Scientist, Cellular Immunology

Dr. Golightly received his Ph.D. in Microbiology and Immunology from the University of California, Los Angeles, where he completed a Post Doctorate in Tumor Immunology. He also completed a Fellowship in Clinical Immunology at Duke University. Dr. Golightly is a professor in the Department of Pathology at State University of New York, where he also serves as Director of the Research Flow Cytometry Core Facility and Head of the Clinical Immunology Laboratory and the Laboratory for the Diagnosis of Lyme Disease. He has over 30 professional journal publications to his credit and has been involved in numerous programs, included those funded by the National Institutes of Health and the National Cancer Institute. Dr. Golightly holds a certification by the American Society of Clinical Pathologists as a Specialist in Immunology and is licensed as a Clinical Laboratory Director by the New York City and State of New York Departments of Health.

Robert Kineiko, Ph.D.
Manager, Scientific Affairs

Dr. Kineiko received his Ph.D. from Columbia Pacific University in San Rafael, California and has been on staff at ICON Laboratories since 2000. Prior to coming to ICON Laboratories, Dr. Kineiko served as Chemistry Supervisor for Brunswick Hospital in Amityville, NY, University Hospital at State University of NY, Stony Brook and Laboratory Administrator for South Side Hospital in Bay Shore, NY. He has also served as Associate Professor in the School of Allied Health’s Medical Technology program at SUNY, Stony Brook. Dr. Kineiko is certified as a Clinical Chemist by the National Registry in Clinical Chemistry and as a Chemistry Specialist by the American Society of Clinical Pathologists.

Gary Paul Leonardi, Ph.D.
Consulting Scientist, Virology

Dr. Leonardi received his Ph.D. in Physiology with a concentration in Cell Biology from New York University, where he has also taught numerous courses, including Principals of Biology and Genetics. In addition to serving as an Infectious Disease Consultant to ICON Laboratories, Dr. Leonardi works at the Nassau County Medical Center in New York, where he serves as the Director of Virology and Associate Director of the Biomedical Research Facility. He also serves as the Associate Laboratory Director at Sunrise Medical Laboratories in New York.

Lance Phalen, MS
Associate Director, General Laboratory

Mr. Phalen received his MS in Medical Technology from St. Johns University in Jamaica, NY, where he also received BS degrees in Medical Technology and Toxicology. He has been on staff at ICON Laboratories since 1997. Prior to joining ICON Laboratories, Mr. Phalen served as Senior Technologist in the Chemistry/Special Chemistry/RIA laboratory of Brunswick Hospital in Amityville, NY. He is certified as a Clinical Laboratory Scientist by the National Certification Agency and as a Medical Technologist, by the American Society of Clinical Pathologists.

Carol Rosenthal, MS
Associate Director, Infectious Disease Laboratory

Ms. Rosenthal received an MS in Medical Biology from C.W. Post and an MPS in Human Resource Management from State University of New York, Stony Brook where she also completed a BS in Biology and Medical Technology. She has been on staff at ICON Laboratories since 1998. Prior to joining ICON Laboratories, Ms. Rosenthal worked in the Immunology Department at University Hospital in Stony Brook, NY and at Southampton Hospital. She is ASCP qualified in Flow Cytometry and ASCP certified in Immunology, and Medical Technology. She is also certified as a Clinical Laboratory Scientist by the NCA and is licensed as a Veterinary Technician by the State of New York.

Charles Salerno, BS
Consulting Scientist, Toxicology

Mr. Salerno received his BS in Toxicology from St. John’s University, Jamaica, NY. He joined ICON Laboratories in 1993. Prior to joining ICON Laboratories, he was employed as a Chemical Forensic Scientist in the Suffolk County Crime Laboratory of the Suffolk County Medical Examiner’s Office. He also held technologist positions in the Departments of Toxicology at University Hospital, State University of New York, Stony Brook and the New York State Institute for Basic Research. Mr. Salerno has also worked at Clin Path/Tox Laboratories and SmithKline Bioscience laboratories in the area of GCMS.

Dieter Mark Schapfel, MD, FCAP
Consulting Pathologist

Dr. Schapfel holds an MD from State University of New York at Stony Brook where he completed an Anatomic and Clinical Pathology Residency. His professional experience includes serving as Assistant Pathologist at Good Samaritan Hospital Medical Center and Director of Medical Affairs and Pathology at ICON Laboratories. He is the author of several publications, including articles that have appeared in Laboratory Medicine, Pediatric Nephrology and Clinical Chemistry.
